Joining Wood: Techniques for Better Woodworking
Rodale Pr | May 1992 | ISBN: 0875961215 |
Possibly the most important task in woodworking is joinery - attaching one board to another. It can also be a thoroughly confusing task. There are countless woodworking joints - rabbets, dadoes, dovetails, mortises and tenons - which do you choose? How do you make it? In Joining Wood, author/craftsman Nick Engler simplifies this complex subject, showing how master woodworkers use good sense and a few elementary rules of thumb to produce strong, durable designs. He also demonstrates how to make dozens of popular woodworking joints, from a simple miter to an elegant through dovetail, using just five basic cuts!

Architectural Design: Rehabilitated buildings
English / Spanish | Links International | ISBN 8486426766 | 2000 Year | 238 Pages | PDF | 82 Mb
The shortage of development land makes it necessary to recover old spaces. The solutions chosen are many and varied, ranging from a total change of function to an adaptation of the old use, according to the specific problems of each case. This volume presents the different schools and tendencies within the current world of architectural rehabilitation. Despite their plurality, the proposals contained here are characterized by the fact that they integrate the new needs with a maximum respect for the existing structures and concepts.

Architecture Now! Vol. 1
Philip Jodidio, "Architecture Now! Vol. 1 (English/French/German Edition)"
Taschen 2001 | ISBN-10: 3822860654 | 576 Pages | PDF | 79,6 MB
More than ever before, architecture at the beginning of the 21st century is changing and evolving at lightning speed. Appropriated, chewed up, mulled over, digested, contemplated, and contorted - gathering up along the way fashion, ecology, politics, and art - architectural concepts become veritable things unto themselves in the present tense. As astoundingly diverse as contemporary architecture is, most importantly it is a reflection of what's happening right now all over the world, in people's minds and in the global collective consciousness.
The many faces of world architecture today make for a mind-expanding book. Here you'll find the most recent work of over 60 architects and firms, including familiar names such as O. Gehry, Meier, Ando, Foster, and Starck, as well as a host of newcomers sure to be the architecture-celebrities of future generations. Highlights include Jakob & MacFarlane's morphological Restaurant at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Diller & Scofidio's "Blur Building" proposal for the International Expo 2001 in Switzerland (an ovular structure suspended over a lake, encapsulated by a fine mist of water, creating the look of a cloud hovering over the lake), and Herzog & de Meuron's remarkable Tate Modern. Proving that contemporary architecture is not limited to physical building design, New York firm Asymptote's Guggenheim Virtual Museum is also included, a place where visitors can take a cyber-stroll through rooms that are designed to be "compelling spatial environments." Presented alphabetically by architect or firm, Architecture Now! can be used like a reference guide, with extensive photographs and illustrations, biographical and contact information for designers, and a careful selection of today's most influential architects.

Seismic Design of Buildings to Eurocode 8
Taylor & Francis | 2009-06-17 | ISBN: 0415447623, 0203888944 | 320 pages | PDF | 10,5 MB
As the new Eurocode 8 on the Design of Structures for Earthquake Resistance has acquired the status of a full Euronorm, practical information and training has become urgently needed, especially in relation to the underlying principles of seismic behaviour and the design of building structures. This book covers seismic design in a clear but brief manner and links the principles to the code, illustrated with design examples. Concrete and steel buildings, and their foundations, are given special emphasis but the book is also applicable to many other types of structure and sub-structure.The book stems from practical short courses on seismic design, run jointly by the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) and Imperial College London. Its contributors are either senior academics with significant consulting experience, or leading practitioners, which gives the book a strong industry emphasis. It will be of value to a wide range of practising civil and structural engineers at different stages of their careers; and should also be of direct use to academics preparing courses and worked examples on seismic design to EC8, to advanced undergraduate students, and to Masters level students in Earthquake, Structural or Geotechnical Engineering.

Travel, Space, Architecture
by Jilly Traganou
Hardcover: 352 pages
Publisher: Ashgate (April 1, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0754648273
ISBN-13: 978-0754648277
Book Description
Cultural theorists have, over the past few decades, examined
the role of travel in spatial definition, and have noted its
significance in the constant exchange and interaction between
cultures. Whilst travelling has also been the subject of
architectural research, particularly concerning the work of
internationalist architects of the early 20th Century, deeper
issues of travel, such as mapping, displacement, foreigness
and otherness, have been largely neglected in architectural
theory. This book brings architectural thinking in line with
the cultural theory debates and argues that, rather than
architecture being 'rooted' to place as has traditionally been
asserted, border crossing and cross-cultural encounters have
always been a prevailing paradigm of the spatial conceptualisation,
representation and production of space. It brings together
case studies ranging from those between Japan and Europe in
the period of early modernity, to central Europe and the
Mediterranean within the framework of modern architecture,
and to the USA and the European East in the cold-war era,
unveiling (mis)readings and exchanges that are embedded in
subsequent cultural productions. It also addresses the influence
of globalization on contemporary urban design and architecture,
examining the impact of immigration on metropolitan environments
and the spread of signature architectural practices throughout
the world. In doing so, "Travel, Space, Architecture" promotes
an original understanding of architecture as a practice
concerned with a realm much broader than that of building, and
of the influence of travel on designing and producing spatial
conceptions and forms.

Le Corbusier and the Occult
J. K. Birksted, “Le Corbusier and the Occult”
The MIT Press | ISBN: 0262026481 | 2009-04-30 | PDF | 416 pages | 18,6 МБ
When Charles-Édouard Jeanneret reinvented himself as Le Corbusier in Paris, he also carefully reinvented the first thirty years of his life by highlighting some events and hiding others. As he explained in a letter: “Le Corbusier is a pseudonym. Le Corbusier creates architecture recklessly. He pursues disinterested ideas; he does not wish to compromise himself…. He is an entity free of the burdens of carnality.”
Le Corbusier grew up in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland, a city described by Karl Marx as “one unified watchmaking industry.” Among the unifying social structures of La Chaux-de-Fonds was the Loge L’Amitié, the Masonic lodge with its francophone moral, social, and philosophical ideas, including the symbolic iconography of the right angle (rectitude) and the compass (exactitude). Le Corbusier would later describe these as “my guide, my choice” and as his “time-honored ideas, ingrained and deep-rooted in the intellect, like entries from a catechism.”
Through exhaustive research that challenges long-held beliefs, J. K. Birksted’s Le Corbusier and the Occult traces the structure of Le Corbusier’s brand of modernist spatial and architectural ideas based on startling new documents in hitherto undiscovered family and local archives. Le Corbusier and the Occult thus answers the conundrum set by Reyner Banham (Birksted’s predecessor at the Bartlett School of Architecture) who, fifty years ago, wrote that Le Corbusier’s book Towards a New Architecture “was to prove to be one of the most influential, widely read and least understood of all the architectural writings of the twentieth century.”

Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture
Wiley | 2002 | ISBN: 0471388270 | Pages: 496 | PDF | 14.08 MB
An "anatomical" study of building systems integration with guidelines for practical applications
Through a systems approach to buildings, Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture details the practice of integration to bridge the gap between the design intentions and technical demands of building projects. Analytic methods are introduced that illustrate the value, benefit, and application of systems integration, as well as guidelines for selecting technical systems in the conceptual, schematic, and design development stages of projects.
Landmark structures such as Eero Saarinen's John Deere Headquarters, Renzo Piano's Kansai International Airport, Glenn Murcutt's Magney House, and Richard Rogers's Lloyd's of London headquarters are presented as part of an extensive collection of case studies organized into seven categories:
* Laboratories
* Offices
* Pavilions
* Green Architecture
* High Tech Architecture
* Airport Terminals
* Residential Architecture
Advanced material is provided on methods of integration, including an overview of integration topics, the systems basis of architecture, and the integration potential of various building systems. An expanded case study of Ibsen Nelsen's design for the Pacific Museum of Flight is used to demonstrate case study methods for tracing integration through any work of architecture.
Visually enhanced with more than 300 illustrations, diagrams, and photographs, Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture is a valuable reference guide for architecture and civil engineering students, as well as architects, engineers, and other professionals in the construction industry.
