Aesthetics and Technology in Building

Pier Luigi Nervi , "Aesthetics and Technology in Building"
Publisher: Harvard University Press | 1965-01-01 | ISBN 0674007018 | PDF | 210 pages | 25.3 MB

Here is a verbal and pictorial illustration of the credo that has guided one of the world's most distinguished architects throughout his career. "Architecture is, and must be, a synthesis of technology and art."

Using nearly 200 drawings and photographs, including plans, interesting details, various stages of construction, and both interior and exterior views of some of his major works, Mr. Nervi shows how his philosophy is put into practice. Referring to most of his important projects, he discusses solutions to various functional and construction requirements where he used precast and cast-in-place concrete, emphasizing the richness of this material. Mr. Nervi stresses the advantages of reinforced concrete, which, he says, allows greater flexibility and makes it easier to satisfy his triple demand of economy, technical correctness, and aesthetic satisfaction.

In predicting the future of architecture he stresses the necessity of architectural solutions that are functionally and technically sound. His final remarks concern his ideas about the proper course of study for architecture students, training that will produce architects with a "far greater technical sense than in the past, a technical sense which results in a constant search for economic efficiency."

The Architecture of the United Arab Emirates

Salma S. Damluji "The Architecture of the United Arab Emirates"
Ithaca Press (GB) | ISBN: 1859641563 | 2006-06 |
Since the late 1960s, the cities of the United Arab Emirates have experienced unprecedented development and accelerated construction. Viewed in the context of the specific environment and cultural fabric of this desert region in Arabia, the coming of modern architecture has been coupled with extensive cultivation projects implemented in an originally barren landscape. Simultaneously, the cities have also remained true to their heritage and recognized the importance of their vernacular architecture and, in a fascinating contrast to the rapid modernization, today there are also many reconstruction and heritage projects underway. Recognizing the need for a publication that discusses this architectural antithesis, "The Architecture of the United Arab Emirates" includes contributions by architectural professionals and specialists who have witnessed this firsthand. Dr Damluji has selected articles which fall into two sections: modern architecture - which questions the form of new cities, the contribution of international architectural practice and the state of modern Islamic architecture; and vernacular architecture - which discusses architectural surveys carried out and conservation and heritage projects throughout the UAE. The book concludes with discussions of the ongoing reconstruction of traditional buildings, regeneration s

The Architecture of Poetry - The Iranian Embassy in Washington

The Architecture of Poetry - The Iranian Embassy in Washington, DC
NAMEI, MERCEDEH
University of Cincinnati
School of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: A thesis for Master Degree
142 pgs. ; Publ. 2007.

Book Description:
An embassy is a symbol of unique cultural, social and
political aspects of a specific country. Historically it
becomes a place for a country’s representative(s) to
communicate in a civilized and acceptable manner.
Communications among embassies have traditionally been a
great resource for international diplomacy that promotes
peace and friendship. An embassy is an office building
that specializes in diplomatic relationships and a great
representative for one culture. Presenting a culture
requires multifaceted revelation of its aspects. In the
project Architecture of Poetry was derived from Persian
poetry. In order to understand Persian culture and its
classical poetry, the methodology includes discussion of
Ferdosi’s Shähnameh (The Epic of Kings). Persian poetry is
deeply rooted in its history and culture. It was developed
through centuries of repetition and practice. Understanding
Persian poetry reveals layers of history, culture and
traditions. It requires understanding structure, order and
the metaphorical foundation of poetry as well as the reasons
behind lyrics, meanings and characters. The Architecture of
Poetry leads to a design that explores Shähnameh’s poetry in
addition to known embassy structures where the elements
learned from each interweave to create the design of the
Iranian embassy. The structure of poetry corresponds with the
structure of the building, where metaphorical words have
translated into interior details and materials of the façade.
Poetry reading is a slow and gradual process, where punctuation
becomes important to convey the message of poetry. The
translated architectural elements from poetry are not literal;
but they are very abstract. Metaphors of culture and poetry a
re revealed in the structure and details of the new embassy.

New Country Houses - Architectural Design

Dominic Bradbury, "New Country Houses - Architectural Design"
Links International | ISBN: 1856693961 | 2003
| 240 pages (full)
Product Description:
For a long time now, the emphasis of radical architecture has rested on the challenge of designing homes in towns and cities and the focus of building in the coutryside has been the conservation, conversion and renovation of existing structures. But now, as more and more people grow tired of the stresses of city living, many have set out for the countryside, taking with them a powerful design consciousness. This book explores the architects who are reinventing the country house and creating new rural architecture for the 21st century. After charting the development of the genre, Bradbury examines 30 case studies that show how architects have taken both modern and traditional approaches to reinventing the country house. The variety, energy and originality of these houses are startling and each shows a fresh, flexible and ergonomic way of living in the surrounding landscape.

Publication Date: 2000-02-22
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0419197508
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780419197508

Book Description:
Malcolm Quantrill first met Norman Foster in 1991, when he
wrote an article on Foster's Tokyo Century Tower. The result
was a collaboration between Qunatrill and the Foster studio
in the production of this unique study of the Foster ethos.
The Norman Foster Studio offers a number of original
revelations about the philosophy and design methods that have
generated the reputation of the Foster studio over the past
three decades. Quantrill's explorations begin with a
distinctly personal account of Norman Foster's childhood and
beginnings in the world of architecture, and continues with
a dialohue between the author and each of the five members
of the Foster parternship. At the core of this book is the
provocative critique of some of Foster's key buildings and
projects including the Joslyn Museum Extension in Omaha.
In the first truly comprehensive critique of the Foster
oeuvre, the book is fully illustrated throughout and contains
many original drawings by SirNorman Foster and much previously
unpublished material from the practice archives.

Norman Foster - Building The Gherkin

Can a single building impact the career of an architect, the image of a global company and the future of a major city? Building the Gherkin chronicles the design, planning and construction of the controversial Swiss Re building, an ‘ecological skyscraper’ designed by renowned British architect Norman Foster.

Just a month and a day after the World Trade Center attack in New York, the first steel beam of 30 St Mary Axe (as its officially known) was erected in London on a site that had seen two previous IRA bombings. One question was on everyone’s mind: was it the right time and place to build a new iconic tower?

Sparking further controversy was the building’s design. Meant to address spatial, environmental, and social concerns, its unique design was so radical that it quickly became the target of ridicule in the British press, earning its nickname, ‘the erotic gherkin.’

Building the Gherkin is a fascinating documentary that covers the four-and-a-half year development period. Documenting everything from the initial blueprint design to the give-and-take between client and architect to the furnishing of the workspace, the film provides an essential, rarely-presented, overview of the entire architectural process.

So has the Gherkin become the landmark they all dreamt of? Since its completion in 2004, the building has won a number of prestigious architecture awards, and was voted the most admired new building in the world by fellow architects. But perhaps more importantly, the Gherkin has punctured the zeitgeist. It has been prominently featured in two Hollywood films (Woody Allen’s Match Point and Basic Instinct 2), a comic book, a video game, and has even been blown up by aliens in a popular British science-fiction television series.

From the Publisher
An introductory essay by Deyan Sudjic presents the Great Court as the culmination of centuries of change within the Museum .a reconciliation of past and future, which has both restored and transfigured the heart of this public institution. Spencer de Grey, a partner at Foster and Partners, documents the design and construction of the individual elements within the Great Court and the vast glazed canopy, which surmounts them. Introduced by Norman Foster and richly illustrated with photographs of the Great Court during construction and in its spectacular finished state, this book provides an insight into the evolution of one of London ’s most remarkable architectural spaces.
